HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall baseball (4-5) dropped its home opener to Binghamton (1-5) at Kennedy Center Field on Friday, 3-1.
Â
"Unfortunately, we got the loss today," 13th-year head coach Jeff Waggoner said. "We still want to win the series. Pitching did a great job keeping us in the game and the defense was good. We had opportunities with runners in scoring position, but we didn't get the job done. We have to come out ready tomorrow and win the first game."
Â
Zach Inskeep got the scoring started in the bottom of the fifth with his second home run of the season to put Marshall up 1-0.
Â
Joshua Shapiro started the game for the Herd and went five scoreless innings, giving up just three hits and two walks, while striking out four Bearcat hitters.
Â
Binghamton struck for a run to tie the game, 1-1, in the top of the sixth on a two-out single by Trenholm.
Â
Marshall had the bases loaded with two outs with Reynaldo Pastrana at the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Pastrana got it to a full-count, but struck out as the game remained 1-1.
Â
Trenholm struck for another two-out RBI single in the top of the eighth, before a wild pitch and an error gave allowed Binghamton to score another and lead 3-1.
Â
The Herd had a runner on in each of the final two innings, but couldn't manage to make a comeback.
Â
UP NEXT
Marshall will conclude its series with Binghamton Saturday with a double-header starting at 11 a.m.
