Baseball Comes Back to Defeat VMI

Marshall has had 10 or more hits in each game of its six-game win streak

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – Marshall baseball (10-5) continued to ride its hot bats as it came back on Wednesday afternoon to defeat VMI, 7-6, on the road.

"I'm really excited to see our guys comeback twice in a mid-week game," 13th-year head coach Jeff Waggoner said. "The bullpen did a great job of shutting them down. Elvis Peralta had a huge hit in the seventh to give us the lead. Now we have to get ready for a really good FIU team coming in on Friday to start conference play."

The Cadets struck first scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning without recording a hit.

The Herd would come back the next half inning and go on a two-out rally scoring a pair of runs on singles by Raul Cabrera and Geordon Blanton to trail 3-2 after two innings of play.

In the top of third, Zach Inskeep gave Marshall its first lead of the game, 4-3, on a two-run homer, his fourth of the season.

VMI regained the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring three more runs to take a 6-4 lead.

Inskeep hit in his third RBI of the game in the seventh on a single, followed by a two-out two-RBI single in the inning to put Marshall on top for the rest of game at 7-6.

The Herd bullpen of Sam Boone, Hunter Sexton, D'Andre Knight, Patrick Murphy and Robert Kwiatkowski combined to give up just three hits and two walks across the final 6.1 innings and combined for six strikeouts including three by Sexton.

Sexton won his first game of the season as Kwiatkowski got the save.

The Herd is on a six-game win streak and has had at least 10 hits in each game of that span. Marshall has scored six or more runs in its last five games.

UP NEXT
Marshall will begin conference play on Friday as it hosts FIU in a three-game series.
