Herd concludes weekend competition
ROCK HILL, S.C.- Yesterday, Marshall concluded its final day at the 2019 Winthrop Invitational—a three-day affair hosted by Big South Conference's Winthrop University.
Following a successful Friday, one that saw Reneese Batson set an outdoor school record in hammer, three Herd runners qualify for the 100-meter hurdles final and a handful of other top-3 finishes, Marshall registered two more wins and ten top-five finishes.
Junior Safiyyah Mitchell won her first 100-meter hurdles final of the outdoor season, recording a time of 13.55. Just a day before, Mitchell had set an outdoor personal best with her preliminary 13.45 time—one that ranks tenth in the nation and first in Conference USA, per TFRSS. Sophomore Taylor Robinson came in second with a time of 14.10. The time ranks currently ranks as the third-fastest among Conference USA athletes. Junior Christianna Dogan also finished seventh.
The other first-place finish for the Herd came by way of the 4x100 relay. A team of Brandy Elysee, Kayla Haywood, Mitchell and Talor Wilkerson clocked in at 46.74 seconds on its way to winning the event.
Kayla Haywood also managed fourth place in the 100-meter final (12.01) and Christianna Dogan took fourth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:01.67).
In javelin throw, Sylvia Terente's mark of 40.28 meters helped her take third place—only a week after finishing in ninth at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. Heidi Heiniger came in eighth place in the event (37.74).
Madelyn Garrison and Ian Domenick both garnered fifth-place finishes in their events, with Garrison running a 5:04.20 in the women's 1500-meter developmental and Domenick running a 2:01.70 in the men's 800-meter developmental.
