Â
"Overall it was a great team win," 13th-year head coach Jeff Waggoner said. "Everybody stepped up. We needed everyone to step up and they responded. Now we have to get ready to win the series tomorrow."
Â
Marshall got on the board first with a one-out homer by Elvis Peralta, Jr., in the top of first.
Â
The Blazers answered as Jess Davis homered to lead off the bottom half of the first, but starting pitcher Wade Martin settled in by retiring the three batters in order to keep the score 1-1.

Â
Martin exited after three innings with a no decision as he made way for Ryan Falls. Falls gave up a leadoff double and a walk to start the outing, but worked out the jam with a pair of strikeouts maintain the tied score.

Marshall then struck for a big inning in the top of the fifth. Tucker Linder started the inning with a single, followed by a single from Rey Pastrana and a walk drawn by Andrew Zban to load the bases. Luke Edwards then singled home a run, followed by a two-RBI single from Evan Hurn. UAB recorded its first out on a Blanton sacrifice fly to score Edwards.
Â
Rodriguez then hit a two-run home run to right center to put the Thundering Herd up 10-4 with still one out. The six-run, six-hit inning concluded with a double play after a Peralta single.
Â
The Blazers struck back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to cut the Marshall lead to 10-8.
Â
Falls exited in the sixth after allowing a run off a batter reached on a strikeout wild pitch and a double in which the batter reached third. D'Andre Knight came on ending the inning with a fly-out double play, which scored the runner from third, and a ground out.
Â
Knight was pulled in the bottom of the eighth with a runner at first and one out for Michael Guerrero. Guerrero gave up a two-run home run to Zack Davis on his first pitch. However, he retired the next batters to keep the game tied 10-10.
Â
Knight's final line in a no decision was 2.1 innings pitched, giving up just one run on one hit and striking out three.
Â
Marshall came back in the top of the ninth by loading the bases with no outs. Linder then hit a sacrifice fly to right to bring home Rodriguez and give the Herd an 11-10 lead.
