HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall softball team won its seventh Conference USA series of the season on Saturday after defeating the Florida Atlantic Owls, 4-3 and 10-0, at Dot Hicks Field.
The Thundering Herd improved to 35-18 overall and 16-7 in conference. The Owls fall to 20-29 and 7-16 in conference play.
"It was a great day today from all aspects of the game," Herd head coach Megan Smith said. "Our offense continued to show its power and Mya (Stevenson) had another great day. Her freshman season has been pretty special. She has done a great job and today she stepped up and was really big for us.
"I was really proud of (Williamson). She has had a few shaky starts and I thought today she came out and was poised, confident and controlled them. I really thought our defense was great today. No errors and they made some really tough plays against a tough and quick offense, I thought they handled it really well and backed up their pitchers.
"Now we just have to back it up and come out strong on Sunday."
Game One: Marshall 4, FAU 3
Senior Abigail Tolbert and the Marshall defense held firm in the game one victory making several great plays and Tolbert picking up seven strikeouts. Tolbert earned her 22nd win of the season.
The Owls got on the board in the first inning but Marshall responded as freshman Mya Stevenson went yard for the first time of the day and team-leading 15th of the season, with a two-run shot.
The Herd scored another run in the third when sophomore Rachel Rousseau plated freshman Rachel Pennington with a single to left. Marshall held a 2-run lead, 3-1, but Florida Atlantic came back to tie the game at 3-3 after the top of the sixth.
Junior Sierra Huerta returned the lead to the Herd with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. It was Huerta's seventh home run of the season. Tolbert then recorded two strikeouts in the top of the seventh and Rousseau ended the game running down a fly ball in foul territory in left.
Game Two: Marshall 10, FAU 0 (6 innings)
When the Herd scored in game two, it came in bunches with two runs in the first, four in the third and four in the sixth to complete the doubleheader victories.
Junior Kailee Williamson got the start and pitched all six innings, scattering out five hits and striking out one in the shutout victory. Williamson improved to 11-3 for the year.
Stevenson, Rousseau and senior Hannah Giammarino all finished with two hits apiece. Rousseau got the scoring started with a single to left-center that scored both Harrell and Stevenson.
In the third, sophomore Katie Adams was put in to pinch hit and delivered a two-run single that scored junior Blakely Burch and Rousseau. Giammarino then stepped up and sent a pitch over the fence in left-center to give the Herd a 6-0 lead.
Marshall's offense got moving again in the sixth. Giammarino led off and was hit by a pitch, her first of the season. Sophomore Armani Brown reached on an error that also allowed Giammarino to score. Freshman Aly Harrell was walked for the 60th time this year to put two runners on for Stevenson. With a 1-1 count, Stevenson drove the ball over the fence in center for her 16th jack of the year and ended the game at 10-0.
Stevenson finished the day with five RBI and Rousseau was next with three.
Coming into the weekend, Marshall was already one of five teams in C-USA that had punched its ticket to the conference tournament, May 8-11, in Birmingham. Louisiana Tech, North Texas, WKU and Southern Miss were the others.
The series finale for Marshall and FAU is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. The Herd's seven seniors will be honored on the field in a pregame ceremony.
