MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Marshall volleyball team dominated in its second match Friday with another sweep (25-14, 25-19, 25-15) this time of the Southeastern Louisiana Lions. Marshall ends its time at the Comfort Inn-vitational with a 2-1 record.

The Thundering Herd improved to 9-4 for the year while the Lions fall to 4-8.

"This preseason has been challenging every step of the way," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "I am so proud of this team for waking up every day ready to work. Playing four matches in four days on the road is tough. We came out, dropped one in five (sets) because we have a team of fighters. I am proud but we're all ready to lock in and get started for Conference USA and our first home match versus Southern Miss."

Marshall controlled the net yet again with 12 team blocks, the ninth time this season that the Herd has tallied double-digit rejections in a contest. Marshall only hit double-digits in blocks in three contests in 2018.

As of Friday morning, before the last two matches, Marshall was ranked eighth in the nation in blocks per set at 3.00. Junior middle blocker Destiny Leon, who recorded five more blocks, was ranked 30th in the country in blocks per set at 1.45 and sophomore Isa Dostal, who had five more as well against the Lions, was 43rd in the nation with 1.38 per set. Those spots are sure to go up with their performances on Friday.

Redshirt junior Ciara Debell had another great all-around performance as she finished with 19 kills to lead the team, along with 12 digs and four total blocks. She also hit at a .410 clip. Sophomore Joelle Coulter had eight kills and Leon added seven with a .538 attack percentage. As a team, the Herd had a .306 attack percentage while the Lions hit at a .107 rate.

Sophomore Gabrielle Coulter recorded 34 more assists, tying her season-high. Senior Amber Weber had 14 digs to lead the team and added six assists as well.

The first set began as a slug fest with seven ties and four lead changes. However, once Marshall took back the lead at 8-7 on a kill by Dostal, the Herd began to pull away. Marshall used runs of 3-0, 4-0 and 5-0 to build the lead out to eight, 22-14. The Herd scored the final three points including freshman Gracie Brumfield picking up her first career service ace for the final point, 25-14.

In the second set Marshall used an early 5-0 run to go up 7-2 and held on the rest of the way. The closest the Lions could bring the score was trailing by two at 17-15. The Herd pulled away slowly before grabbing the 25-19 win and going up 2-0 in the match.

Southeastern Louisiana fought hard in the third set and built out a four-point lead at 8-4 and a three-point lead at 10-7. The Herd settled in and began another roll to tie the set at 12-12 and then finished off the match 13-3 including a 7-0 run to end it, 25-15. Debell tallied two more kills in the final run including the last point.

Marshall ends its non-conference schedule with a 9-4 record and playing all 13 matches on the road. The Herd will have a week to get ready for Conference USA action, not to mention the team's first home matches of 2019. Southern Miss will be the first to visit the Cam Henderson Center on Friday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m., followed by FIU on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m.
