Volleyball Sweeps Coppin State with Well-Rounded Offense

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Marshall volleyball team ran off with another sweep (29-27, 25-10, 25-11) of the Coppin State Eagles on the second day of the Comfort Inn-vitational, hosted by Morehead State on Friday. Marshall had five players all record at least five kills in the match.

The Thundering Herd improves to 8-4 while the Eagles fall to 3-8.

Junior Destiny Leon led the way on offense, tying her career-high with 11 kills. Leon was deadly accurate as well with just 14 attacks and a hitting percentage of .786. Redshirt junior Ciara Debell was next with nine kills, followed by sophomore Joelle Coulter with eight, sophomore Gabrielle Coulter with six and sophomore Isa Dostal with five. G. Coulter was also very accurate with her attempts hitting at a .750 clip. G. Coulter recorded 28 assists in the contest as well.

After smashing 22 team blocks Thursday night, the most by a Marshall squad in over a decade, the Herd recorded eight more as this time it was Dostal leading the way getting her hands in on seven blocks. Senior Ivana Trencheva recorded a Marshall career-high four total blocks and added four kills on offense.

Senior libero Amber Weber again led the team in digs with 15, averaging five per set. J. Coulter and Debell both had six digs in the win.

Some newcomers were able to come in and some playing time as sophomore transfer Zoie Holley recorded her first kill in a Marshall uniform. Freshman Meagan Camden tallied two service aces and three digs while coming off the bench in all three sets. Fellow freshman Gracie Brumfield appeared in her first two collegiate sets and had one dig and one attack.

The first set was an absolute battle that featured 14 ties, three lead changes and five set-points before Marshall finally closed it out at 29-27. Neither team led by more than three points. Coppin State pulled out to a 3-point lead at 19-16 before the Herd rolled off three-straight to tie the set again. After the Eagles took the lead, 20-19, Marshall went on another 3-0 run to re-take the lead 22-20. The Herd hit set-point the first time at 24-22 on an Eagle service error. However, Coppin State fought back and tied it up at 24-24. For the remainder of the match, Marshall took the lead and then Coppin State immediately tied things up again. The Herd finally held on after getting the score to 28-27 and then Leon put it away with her sixth kill of the set.

The second and third sets were dominated by Marshall. In the second period, the only time the score was tied was 1-1 and then the Herd took the lead off a kill by Dostal and did not look back. Marshall used four runs of at least 3-0 to take the 2-0 lead in the match. The Herd scored 11 of the last 12 points in the set.

In the third set, the score was tied just once at 3-3 and again once the Herd took the lead, it did not look back. Marshall put together a 5-0 run to go up 10-4, and a 4-0 run to increase the lead to nine, 15-6. The Herd scored the final five points of the match to take the sweep.

Marshall gets a short break before returning to the court at 3:30 p.m. against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions. Live scoring will be provided for the match.
