GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Marshall baseball fell in its season-opener, 9-2, to the No. 4 (D1Baseball.com poll)/No. 10 (USA Today Coaches poll) Florida Gators Friday night in front of 4,441 fans at Alfred A. McKethan Stadium.
The Herd moved to 0-1 as the Gators start the season 1-0.
"I thought we came in and handled the environment well," head coach Jeff Waggoner said. "I thought our guys came out ready to play. It was a good game until the 7th inning and we had a chance to turn a double play and didn't, and the game got away from us. Four runs in the 7th inning really changed the game and hats off to them, they had good at-bats with runners in scoring position. We didn't but I thought overall other than a few plays, we played pretty good.
We need to make a few adjustments and come out ready to play tomorrow."
Offensively, the middle infielder duo of junior Geordon Blanton and sophomore Luke Edwards led the way with 2-for-4 nights each. Blanton scored both runs for Marshall and added a double during the game, and Edwards had a pair of doubles.
Junior Jordon Billups and freshman Zach Gardiner each recorded their first hits in a Marshall uniform.
Senior Zach Inskeep (1-for-3) drew the lone walk for the Thundering Herd on the night.
On the mound, redshirt senior starter Wade Martin (0-1) pitched 3.2 innings in the start, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits, allowing 1 walk. He struck out 5 Gators, one shy of matching his 2019 high in strikeouts at 6.
Redshirt junior Robert Kwiatkowski and senior Bryan Callaly each pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless and hitless baseball in relief. Kwiatkowski struck out one batter while Callaly mowed down three.
