No. 4/10 Florida Completes Sweep of Herd, 15-8

2/16/2020 5:47:00 PM | Baseball

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The No. 4 (D1Baseball.com poll)/No. 10 (USA Today Coaches poll) Florida Gators completed a season-opening sweep over Marshall, 15-8, Sunday afternoon in front of 3,903 fans at Alfred A. McKethan Stadium.

The Thundering Herd dropped to 0-3 in the young season.

The Marshall offense came alive Sunday and jumped out to a fast start, scoring five runs in the opening two innings. Junior Jordon Billups put Marshall on the board early with his 1st inning two RBI double to score junior Geordon Blanton, who led off the game with a single on the first pitch, and Zach Inskeep.

After the Gators tied the contest in the bottom half of the inning, in the 2nd, Blanton crushed to left field the first home run of the season for Marshall. His 3-run blast scored Sam Linscott and Brady Garrison.

Billups later drove in two more runs on a single in the 6th inning, finishing 2-for-4 with 4 RBI. Blanton went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.

Redshirt junior Peter Hutzal and junior Sam Linscott each had two hits.

Marshall pitching struggled against the potent Florida offense. Walks plagued the staff for the second consecutive game, with seven being the number of free passes allowed. Eight different pitchers threw off the mound for Marshall.

Starter Jeffrey Purnell (ND: 1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 WP) faced seven batters and was lifted after walking consecutive batters in the 2nd inning. Bryan Callaly (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

The Gators scored in every inning it batted in except for the 8th, including a game-high four runs in the 4th inning.

UP NEXT

The Herd will travel to play in the Hughes Bros. Challenge next weekend in Wilmington, North Carolina against Butler, Bowling Green, and UNC Wilmington.

Marshall will face Butler to begin the tournament at noon on Friday, February 21.
