Herd returns to Wilmington, North Carolina

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—Marshall baseball returns to action Friday in Wilmington, North Carolina at the Hughes Bros. Challenge hosted by UNCW at Brooks Field.

Marshall (0-3) will play four games, with a schedule change occurring due to Butler's travel schedule being impacted due to weather.

The Thundering Herd will now play against Bowling Green on Friday at 3 p.m.

The Herd plays just one game on Saturday, coming against the hosts UNCW at 3 p.m. Marshall will then play twice Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m. against Bowling Green.

The weekend will be capped by a finale between Marshall and UNCW at approximately 3 p.m.

The contests against UNCW will be streamed, free of charge. Live stats are available for all games.

Marshall competes for the first time since being swept last weekend by No. 4 (D1Baseball.com poll) Florida, a team which rose to No. 2 in the same poll after the three-game set in Gainesville.

A pair of juniors led the way offensively for Marshall against the Gators. Jordon Billups and Geordon Blanton enter the second weekend of competition with identical batting averages of .364 (4-for-11). Each started all three games (Billups at RF; Blanton at SS) and the duo combined for 7 RBI Sunday.

On the mound, 15 pitchers saw action against the potent Florida lineup. The team will aim to eliminate free passes, as the team issued 23 walks as opposed to 21 strikeouts.

The three starters from Florida in Wade Martin, Brady Choban, and Jeffrey Purnell make their second starts of the season, with Ryan Capuano added to the mix per the additional game. Capuano started in 11 games last year, and appeared in relief for 2.0 innings Saturday at Florida.

BACK TO WILMINGTON

The Thundering Herd returns to Wilmington for the second consecutive season to compete in the Hughes Bros. Challenge. A season ago, Marshall went 3-1 in the event (Defeated Iona 9-8 (10 innings), Lost to Indiana State 4-1, Defeated Iona 8-3, Defeated UNCW 1-0).

SCOUTING THE FALCONS

Marshall meets its former Mid-American Conference foe for the 58th time in history (13-44) and for the first time since 2003, when Marshall took the road and won 3 of 4 games in northeast Ohio.

The Falcons are the first of three MAC schools the Thundering Herd will play this season (Akron, Ohio). The Falcons enter the weekend 0-3, having been swept in Nashville, Tennessee by Lipsomb.

SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS

Last year in the Hughes Bros. Challenge, Marshall knocked off the host Seahawks 1-0 with a 6th inning run being the difference. The 2019 meeting was the first in school history between the two sides.

UNCW is 3-2, coming off a mid-week loss at Coastal Carolina.
