WILMINGTON, N.C.—Marshall baseball lost to Bowling Green, 5-3, in the opening game of the Hughes Bros. Challenge Friday at Brooks Field on the campus of UNCW.
The Thundering Herd dropped to 0-4 with the loss.
The game was scoreless until the 3rd inning when the Falcons led off with consecutive hits, and would end up scoring three runs, one of which was unearned off redshirt senior Wade Martin.
Martin (0-2) pitched 4.0 innings, striking out eight Bowling Green batters. That mark was his most since March 16, 2018 against UAB, when he also struck out eight, which his final start and appearance of the season before suffering a season-ending injury.
The Thundering Herd got on the board in the 5th inning when freshman catcher Ryan Leitch singled down the left field line, scoring Sam Linscott.
An inning later, senior Zach Inskeep hit his first home run of the season, the second this season by a Marshall batter, to make the game 3-2.
Bowling Green extended its lead to 5-2 in the 7th before Linscott recorded an RBI single in the 8th to score Inskeep and put the game at its final score line, 5-3.
Junior Geordon Blanton (2-for-3, 2 BB) reached base a team-high four times and led with two hits.
Marshall returns to action Saturday against UNCW. The first pitch for the opening game of the day, UNCW vs Bowling Green, was moved back to noon, pushing back Marshall's approximate start time to 4 p.m. The game will be streamed live here.
