CONFERENCE PLAY BEGINS
Marshall ended the regular season 14-15 last season in Conference USA play. The Herd seeks its first winning record in conference play since finishing 21-9 in 2016.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The two teams each have scores to settle with each other, dating back to the end of last season. Marshall has won three-straight regular season matchups between the two sides, as Marshall swept Rice to end the 2019 regular season in Huntington.
However, Rice defeated Marshall and ended the Thundering Herd's season less than one week later, 6-3, at the C-USA Baseball Tournament in Biloxi, Mississippi.
RARE HERD IN HOUSTON
Despite both Marshall and Rice entering Conference USA in 2005, this will only be the fifth series between the two teams in Houston. Last season, Marshall and Rice met on the diamond for the first time since 2013, which was the last time Marshall faced the Owls in Houston.
The Herd was swept in that series, and is just 1-11 all-time against the Owls in Houston. Marshall's only win ever at Rice was Sunday, April 19, 2009 when the Herd took down No. 1 Rice, led by current MLB stars Anthony Rendon and Brock Holt, to salvage a win in the three-game series.
HAVE YOU HERD?
- Redshirt senior Wade Martin was named Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Last Saturday against Akron he was dominant, pitching 6.2 innings, allowing just one run on three hits. He struck out 11 batters, which matched a career-high set April 1, 2017 at Middle Tennessee.
- Martin became the first Marshall baseball player to earn weekly conference honors since Michael Guerrero earned Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week honors on May 19 of last season. Guerrero was one of two Herd athletes to earn weekly honors last season (Shane Hanon—Hitter of the Week, March 11).
- Redshirt junior Robert Kwiatkowski over his past 4 appearances has thrown 8.0 innings, allowing zero earned runs or hits. He has struck out 11 and walked 0 batters over that stretch.
- The Herd has won four of its last five. Marshall is coming off its first road win, 3-2, at Ohio on Wednesday.
