Kinsey scored 22, Taylor collects double-double

Box Score

RUSTON, La. – The Marshall University Thundering Herd men's basketball team (7-2, 1-1 C-USA) overcame a 17-point, second-half deficit to down Louisiana Tech (8-3, 1-1 C-USA) 80-73 in Ruston on Saturday night.

"They are 33-3 at home recently, and two of those losses have come to us," Marshall head coach Dan D'Antoni said. "When you're down 17, that's tough, but it makes you so proud of the kids."

Taevion Kinsey lead the Herd in scoring for the second night in Ruston with 20 points on a 5-for-10 night from field, while draining all nine of his attempts from the free-throw line. The Columbus, Ohio, native also grabbed eight rebounds while dishing out five assists.

Andrew Taylor recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, eight on the defensive end of the court. The redshirt sophomore guard fell one assist shy of a triple-double with nine helpers.

Mikel Beyers poured 17 points into the basket, Jarrod West added 13 and Goran Miladinovic had 10 as the Herd had five student-athletes in double-digit scoring. Miladinovic also led MU with a career-high three steals.

Kinsey started the game by scoring the Herd's first five points on his first two attempts from the field.

The Bulldogs, however, roared back with a 7-0 run after Kinsey's three as Marshall missed its next four attempts and was held scoreless for nearly four minutes before Mikel Beyers made a layup to pull the deficit to 9-7.

Tech continued its offensive prowess in the first half with an 11-0 run, with seven points coming from Cobe Williams, as MU trailed 23-9 at the 8:32 mark. The 14-point advantage was the Bulldogs' largest of the first half.

The Herd scored the next six points with a three from West, a Darius George free-throw and a layup from Taylor to cut the deficit to eight, 23-15.

After trading points for a few possessions, Louisiana Tech tallied nine of the final 11 points of half, as Marshall trailed 40-27 at the break.

The Herd struggled offensively in the opening frame making just 9-of-33 attempts (27 percent) from the field as the Bulldogs made 13 of its 28 shots (46.4 percent).

Tech opened the second half on 8-4 streak and extended its lead to a game-high 17 points, 48-31.

However, the Herd wasn't ready to back down. Miladinovic scored six and Taylor drained a three to cut the deficit to single digits, 48-40, just over six minutes into the final stanza.

Marshall inched closer with a Jannson Williams dunk, a pair of Kinsey free throws, and two- and three-point buckets from Beyers as a 9-3 run pulled it within four, 58-52, with about 11 minutes remaining.

The Bulldogs answered immediately with a 5-0 streak, but MU wanted to finish the rally. With a pair of threes and a layup from Beyers, followed by a dunk and an and-one from Kinsey, gave the Herd a 62-60 lead, its first since the 17:53 mark of the first half, as part of a 13-3 run.

C. Williams hit a three-pointer for Tech, who then lead for a mere 14 seconds before Taylor answered with a deep ball of his own to put Herd back on top for the remainder of the game.

The Bulldogs fought down the stretch, but with the Herd leading by one, 71-70, and 43 ticks on the clock, West nailed a three to send the Herd on a 9-3 run to finish off the victory.

NOTES
