Abby Herring went wire-to-wire Saturday morning and won the 5,000-meter Live In Lou Classic at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park for the Marshall women's cross country team.

Herring won the event in 17 minutes and 45.7 seconds, nearly seven seconds ahead of the field. The Parkersburg, W.Va. native helped lead the Thundering Herd to a second overall finish in the team standings with 149 points, behind Grand Valley State (94).

Herring also led the race at 2,100 (7:08) and 3,900 meters (13:35.8).

Kyleigh Edwards took 17th in 18:47.7, followed by Sydney Smith (26th, 18:59), Meagan Ward (45th, 19:12.8), Julia Muller (65th, 19:23.3), Victoria Dotson (78th, 19:39.3), Madelyn Garrison (143rd, 20:11.8), Erykah Christopher (167th, 20:24.6), Mackenzie Stanley (204th, 20:42.2) and Emma Marshall (454th, 24:27.3).

The Marshall men finished in 26th place, led by Evan White's 65th-place finish (25:57.1). Paul Sepulveda (134th, 26:34.1), Jackson Snyder (168th, 26:51.4), Wyatt Hanshaw (182nd, 26:59.3), Brett Armbruster (184th, 27:00), Kazuma Bowring (211th, 27:15.5), Jacob Birurakis (213th, 27:15.7), Ronnie Saunders (231st, 27:23.4) and Jordan Thomas (248th, 27:30).

"It was a heck of a day for our teams," said Caleb Bowen, Marshall's Assistant Coach for Cross Country. "The men took a big step in the right direction today. With a few key members out, we did well in such a large field. Not where we want to be but, with a month to go before conference, we have a good amount of work that will make us better."

"Our women did awesome! It got pretty hot and humid for our races so the times don't exactly reflect just how well we did but I'm ecstatic about our race. Abby winning was so much fun and telling of how fit she is. She went straight to the front from the gun and never looked back. Kyleigh made some great moves in the last two kilometers that put her in the top 20, and Sydney once again showed us how tough she is, finishing just shy of a top 25 spot. We're very proud of each and every one of them!"

The Thundering Herd is off next weekend, followed by a trip to Kernersville, N.C. to run at the VertCross Invitational on Friday, October 15.
