INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Marshall women's golf team finished the Butler Fall Invitational on Tuesday, played at the Highland Country Club.
The Thundering Herd finished seventh overall. Senior Jackie Schmidt climbed into the top 15 in the final round to lead the team.
"I saw some good things this event, but we need to eliminate those big numbers," Herd head coach Brooke Burkhammer said. "Take those away and we are good. Jackie (Schmidt) continues to be solid for us. She's really close to a great event, and I know it will happen soon."
Schmidt scored a 3-over 73 in the final round and moved up eight places on the leaderboard and finished tied for 12th. The senior recorded two birdies and finished with par or better on 13-of-18 holes. Her birdies came on back-to-back holes, Nos. two and three. The Butler Fall Invitational was the Schmidt's fourth career finish in the top 20.
Graduate student Stormy Randazzo improved her score by three strokes in the third round and finished tied for 24th. Senior Torren Kalaskey stayed steady and also finished in the top 30, tied for 26th. Junior Makena Rauch lowered her score by five strokes and moved up nine places on the leaderboard. Freshman Katie Potter tallied a birdie on No. 14.
As a team, the Herd improved its group score by eight strokes in the third round.
Austin Peay came through on Tuesday to take the lead and eventually win the event by two strokes over Belmont. Host Butler fell back to third place. Cameron Fish of Belmont also jumped into the top spot on the leaderboard with a 5-under, 65 in the final round. She defeated Erica Scutt of Austin Peay by three shots.
