Softball Struggles at Longwood

Next up for Herd, three-game series at Chattanooga March 20-21

Box Scores (PDF): Game One | Game Two

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Marshall softball team couldn't quite find its rhythm in dropping two games to the Longwood Lancers on Wednesday, 5-2 and 7-5.

The Thundering Herd falls to 6-3, while the Lancers improve to 6-13.

Game One: Longwood 5, Marshall 2
The Herd managed just five hits in the first contest of the day. Senior Aly Harrell had two hits including a solo home run. It was her team-leading fourth home run of the season and the 34th of her career, good for third all-time in program history. Graduate Sierra Huerta had a hit and was hit by a pitch twice. The 2019 NCAA leader in hit-by-pitches has been plunked four times this year and now has 40 in her career. Huerta is second all-time behind Marcena Bertoldo (2007-10) who tallied 53.

Harrell's homer in the top of the third put the first run on the board for either team. Longwood then scored two in the bottom of the third. Marshall managed to tie the game in the top of the fourth when Huerta and junior Mya Stevenson were both hit by pitches and then redshirt senior Blakely Burch was walked to load the bases. Senior Madison Whitaker came in as a pinch hitter and grounded out to second, allowing Huerta to score from third.

The Lancers responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead.

The Herd used three pitchers with senior Laney Jones getting the start and pitching into the fourth and took the loss, her first of the season. Senior Megan Stauffer finished the fourth inning. Freshman Brianna McCown pitched the final two innings allowing just one hit.

Stevenson and Whitaker both recorded a hit as well for the Herd.

Game Two: Longwood 7, Marshall 5
Marshall allowed the Lancers 13 hits while totaling seven on offense. Senior Saige Pye and Mya Stevenson had two hits each, including a solo home run from both hitters. Senior Grace Chelemen had a double and freshman Paige Halliwill hit a 2-run single. Freshman catcher Kat Sackett earned her first start, as well as her first collegiate appearance, and picked up her first career hit with a double in the third.

The Herd scored first with three runs in the first inning. Aly Harrell picked up her third walk of the day, and 120th of her career, followed by Pye reaching on a single up the middle. Stevenson came through with a single to right that scored Harrell. Two batters later, Halliwill drove home Pye and Stevenson with a base hit to right field.

Longwood answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Marshall expanded its lead to two runs in the top of the third with Stevenson's solo home run. For Stevenson, it was her second of the season and 34th of her career. Stevenson and Harrell are tied for third all-time in program history, one blast behind Shaelynn Braxton (2013-15, '17) for second all-time.

Longwood tied the game in the bottom of the third and then took the lead in the fourth. The Herd added one more run in the top of the seventh when Pye hit a solo home run with two outs.

Redshirt freshman pitcher Madi Garay got the start and pitched into the third inning. Brianna McCown entered the game and was replaced in the fourth by sophomore Ashley Blessin who was credited with the loss and was pulled in the fifth for redshirt sophomore Cailey Joyce who finished the game.

Marshall returns to action with a three-game road series at Chattanooga, March 20-21.
