Herd Baseball Downed by Owls in Series Finale

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Marshall baseball (4-11, 0-4 C-USA) fell in the final game of its four-game set in Boca Raton against the Florida Atlantic Owls (14-9, 4-0 C-USA), 11-2, on Sunday afternoon.
Starting pitcher John Cheatwood started the contest with a pair of perfect innings. Centerfielder Luke Edwards singled in the third, but was stranded to end the inning.
FAU's Jared DeSantolo led off the bottom of the third with a homer, but Cheatwood retired the next three batters to keep the deficit at 1-0.
Cheatwood returned for a scoreless fourth and was pulled in the bottom of fifth after giving up a leadoff double. His final line was 4.0+ innings pitched giving up just two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out a batter. The Owls would go on to score four runs in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, third baseman Peter Hutzal drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. First baseman Zach Inskeep singled to left and moved Hutzal to third. Designated hitter Cole Williams grounded out to short, but put MU on the board scoring Hutzal. Catcher Kyle Schaefer roped the next pitch to left to score Inskeep and cut the Owls' advantage to 5-2.
FAU didn't wait long to answer as it plated five runs in the bottom of the inning, all with two outs, to increase its advantage to 10-2.
Herd relievers Jeffrey Purnell and Josh Zeboskey combined to throw a scoreless seventh inning.
Florida Atlantic added an insurance run in the eighth as it defeated the Herd 11-2.
Left fielder Devin Ward was the lone Marshall player with multiple hits in the contest, as shortstop Geordon Blanton's double was the lone extra-base hit.

The Herd returns to the Kennedy Center as it hosts Old Dominion for a four-game series beginning on Friday (Apr. 2).
