Herd Baseball Drops Series Opener Against ODU

Heiner strikes out nine
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall baseball (4-12, 0-5 C-USA) dropped its series opener, 12-1, against Old Dominion (18-5, 4-1 C-USA) Friday afternoon at the Kennedy Center. The contest ended in eight innings.
Starting pitcher Chad Heiner (0-3) suffered the loss. He pitched 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. He struck out a career-high nine batters, the same amount of hitters had had struck out this season entering the day.
Jordon Billups hit his first career home run in a Marshall uniform. His fourth inning home run to right field cut at the time the deficit in half, 2-1.
The Monarchs scored multiple runs in each of the remaining innings to create the lopsided final score line. ODU finished with three homers and five doubles.
Missed opportunities plagued the Marshall offense, particularly early in the game. The Herd went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 13 runners on base.
Billups led the way offensively with two hits including his home run (2-for-3, BB). Five other hitters for Marshall recorded one hit, including Tyler Cox's double, the first hit of his collegiate career.
UP NEXT
The Thundering Herd and Monarchs play a doubleheader Saturday, with first pitch in the first game in Huntington set for noon.
