Herd Baseball Falls In Pitcher’s Duel At EKU, 2-1

Team back in action Friday at Ohio
RICHMOND, Ky. – Marshall baseball (1-3) lost a midweek matchup at Eastern Kentucky (4-7) by a final score of 2-1 Tuesday evening at Earle Combs Stadium.
Jaxson Blair (1-0) earned the win on the mound for EKU. Huntington native Chad Heiner (0-1) suffered the loss in his first career start for the Thundering Herd. Will Brian recorded the save (3).
Heiner threw 3.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits. He walked one Colonel batter and struck out three.
The Thundering Herd bullpen pitched strong in relief. Will Dando, Cody Sharp, Nick Jodway and D'Andre Knight combined for 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk. They combined for six strikeouts.
In the pitcher's duel, Marshall hitters mustered three hits. The Herd's only run came in the first inning, when Luke Edwards knocked an RBI double to score Geordon Blanton, who led off the game reaching third base on an EKU error.
The Colonels tied the game in the bottom of the first with a solo home run and took the decisive lead off an RBI single in the third inning.
Marshall had two major chances to tie the game or take the lead. In the top of the fourth, the Herd loaded the bases, all with two outs, but were unable to cross the plate. Additionally, in the top of the eighth, Peter Hutzal doubled with one out and reached third on a wild pitch but did not advance beyond there.
Travis Sankovich's single accounted for the other Marshall hit, and he stole his first base in a Thundering Herd uniform after reaching first.
Defensively, Marshall had its first outfield assist of the season. Jordon Billups threw out a runner at the plate to end the bottom of the fourth.
UP NEXT
The Thundering Herd return to action Friday at the Ohio Bobcats. First pitch from Bob Wren Field is set for 4 p.m., and Marshall is set to host Ohio both Saturday and Sunday at the Kennedy Center Field.
