Â
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Marshall baseball (4-18, 0-11 C-USA) dropped game three of a four game series on Saturday, 5-2, in Bowling Green, Ky., to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (15-16, 5-6 C-USA).
Â
The Hilltoppers jumped out to an early lead scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first off MU starting pitcher Raymond Pacella.
Â
Pacella buckled down and threw scoreless second, third and fourth innings as he struck out three batters.
Â
The Herd collected singles from third baseman Peter Hutzal in the third and left fielder Devin Ward in the fourth, but were unable to score.
Â
Shortstop Geordon Blanton reached on a one-out error in the fifth and Hutzal followed with a double down the left-field line to put Marshall on the board and cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
Â
However, WKU added two runs in the bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth to extend its lead to 5-1.
Â
Reliever Josh Zeboskey threw a perfect seventh and a scoreless eighth to keep the disadvantage at 5-1.
Â
Ward doubled to left to lead off the ninth and eventually scored on a ground out by first baseman Zach Inskeep, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
