Baseball Loses Series Finale at WKU

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Marshall baseball (4-19, 0-12 C-USA) fell in game four of its road series in Bowling Green, Ky., 8-1, to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (16-16, 6-6 C-USA) on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman pitcher Zac Addkison started on the mound for the Herd in game four. He walked the first two batters of the game, but induced a 5-3 double play to get a pair of outs. After walking the next Hilltopper, junior John Cheatwood came on in relief and struck out his lone batter in the frame to end the inning with runners at second and third.
Freshman catcher Ryan Leitch singled to lead off the second inning and stole second with one out. A single to left by senior first baseman Zach Inskeep moved Leitch to third, and a ground out by sophomore designated hitter Kyle Schaefer scored Leitch to give MU an early 1-0 lead.
Cheatwood struck out another pair of Hilltoppers in the bottom of the second and kept the 1-0 lead for the Herd.
WKU struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 advantage over Marshall, but Cheatwood returned in the fourth and faced the minimum to keep the deficit at one.
Inskeep doubled to start the fifth. However, MU failed to bring him home and the Hilltoppers added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to go up 4-1 on Marshall.
Freshman reliever Will Dando came on for Cheatwood to start the bottom of sixth and struck out the side.
The Hilltoppers padded its lead with two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings to hold off the Thundering Herd.
UP NEXT
Marshall returns to the field on Wednesday when it travels to Morgantown to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
