Box Score
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Marshall baseball (4-20, 0-12 C-USA) split its season series with the West Virginia Mountaineers on Wednesday night as it fell 9-3 in Morgantown.
The Herd came out of the gates fast as shortstop Geordon Blanton singled through the left side to leadoff the game. Right fielder Devin Ward completed a sacrifice bunt to move him to second and first baseman Zach Inskeep singled to right field to score Blanton making it 1-0 Marshall.
Starting pitcher Ryan Capuano threw a 1-2-3 bottom of the first inning to start his outing.
In the bottom of the second, the Mountaineers took the lead, 2-1, with a pair of runs.
Relief pitcher Josh Zeboskey came on in the bottom of third and after issuing a one-out walk, induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
The WVU offense plated a run in the fourth and two runs in each the fifth and sixth innings as MU trailed 7-1.
In the top of the seventh, Marshall had two on with two outs and Ward at bat. Down 1-2 in the count, Ward notched a single up the middle to score Zach Gardiner and move third baseman Tyler Cox to second. Leitch then reached on an error and scored Cox to cut the deficit to 7-3.
However, the Mountaineers answered with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 9-3.
Reliever Hunter Harritan recorded a pair of strikeouts in a three up, three down inning in the bottom of the eighth, but the Herd couldn't overcome the deficit.
