Sixth Inning Hurts Herd Baseball In Series Opener Against FIU

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall baseball (4-21, 0-13 C-USA) fell, 8-2, to the visiting FIU Panthers (13-19, 5-8 C-USA) Friday afternoon at the Kennedy Center.

With the score knotted at 2 in the sixth inning, FIU scored six runs in the frame to take the game's decisive lead. Chad Heiner (0-5) suffered the loss on the mound, he pitched 5.1 innings allowing eight runs on eight hits, striking out six.

Prior to the sixth inning, Marshall opened scoring in the second inning. Cyrus Grimes and Jordon Billups had back-to-back doubles with two outs to give the Thundering Herd a 1-0 lead.

FIU struck back for one run in both the third and fourth innings, but in the bottom of the fourth, another two-out extra-base hit for Marshall tied the game. Geordon Blanton hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, to even the game at 2.

The Panthers took the lead with a three-run homer in the sixth followed by three more runs for the contest's final runs scored.

Billups led Marshall's offense, going 2-for-3. Grimes (1-for-2) scored a run and drew a walk. Peter Hutzal and Devin Ward also had singles in the game.

Hunter Harritan and Ryan Capuano pitched 3.0 scoreless innings in relief.

UP NEXT

Marshall and FIU play a doubleheader Saturday, with first pitch of the first game set for noon.
