HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall baseball (5-22, 1-14 C-USA) took game one, 6-1, but fell in game two, 5-0, in a doubleheader with the FIU Panthers (14-20, 6-9 C-USA) on Saturday at the Kennedy Center.
Game 1
Herd starting pitcher Raymond Pacella started the game by pitching perfect innings in the first and second with three strikeouts in his first six outs.
Pacella's perfect game bid was broken up with two outs in the top of the third, as FIU used a two-out single and double to go up 1-0.
Left fielder Josh Pigozzo led off the bottom of the third with a walk as designated hitter Cyrus Grimes and shortstop Geordon Blanton followed with singles to load the bases with no outs.
After centerfielder Luke Edwards reached on a fielder's choice with Pigozzo being forced out at home, catcher Ryan Leitch launched a ball over the left-field fence for a grand slam, his sixth homer of the season, to put MU up 4-1.
The Herd added insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth as Blanton hit his fourth homer of the season in the fifth and Grimes brought home second baseman Travis Sankovich with a two-out single in the sixth.
Pacella finished the last four innings of his outing giving up just one more hit and striking out four for his first complete game and win of his career at Marshall.
Game 2
Patrick Copen started game two on the hill for the Green and White. In his four innings of work, he gave up just three hits and struck out six Panthers, including striking out the side in the top of the fourth.
Marshall relief pitcher Will Dando came on for Copen to start the fifth and threw a perfect inning.
The top of the sixth saw FIU score five runs in an inning that proved costly for the Herd.
MU relief pitcher Cody Sharp threw a perfect top of the seventh inning.
FIU pitcher Steven Casey had a perfect game through 6.1 innings, but saw the bid end when he walked Grimes. Casey finished the game with a no-hitter against Marshall seeing him strike out four and issuing just the walk to Grimes and a hit-by-pitch to Leitch two batters after Grimes in the bottom of the seventh.
