Herd Baseball Battles in Series Opening Loss at No. 14 LA Tech

RUSTON, La. – The Marshall University baseball team (6-23, 2-15 C-USA) battled with the No. 14 Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (27-9, 13-4 C-USA) in a 4-3 loss in Ruston on Friday afternoon.
The Herd got off to a quick start as shortstop Geordon Blanton walked and stole second. Designated hitter Cyrus Grimes followed with a single to left and moved Blanton to third with no outs. Center fielder Luke Edwards grounded out, but Blanton scored to give MU a 1-0 lead.
Starting pitcher Chad Heiner gave up a one-out double, but got out of the bottom of the first inning stranding the runner at third to keep Marshall up 1-0.
The Bulldogs struck for two runs in the bottom of the second and added another run in the third as the Herd trailed 3-1 after three.
Heiner settled in as he pitched 1-2-3 innings in the bottom of the fourth and fifth to complete his outing. The righty went 5.0 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and striking out a pair of batters.
Reliever Josh Zeboskey came on from the bullpen to begin the bottom of the sixth, pitching a perfect inning with a pair of strikeouts to keep the deficit at 3-1.
First baseman Zach Inskeep led off the seventh with a single to third as third baseman Peter Hutzal followed with a double down the left-field line. Right fielder Jordon Billups then drew a walk to load the bases with no outs.
Second baseman Travis Sankovich pulled Marshall within a run, 3-2, on a sacrifice fly right to score Hutzal.
Zeboskey returned to the mound in the bottom of the seventh and worked around a single to keep the game 3-2.
Grimes began the top of the eighth at the plate and mashed a ball over the right-field wall to tie the game, 3-3. It was his second homer of the season.
However, LA Tech's Parker Bates led off the bottom half of the inning with a home run, which proved to be the difference in the game.

Marshall looks to in the win column tomorrow as it is readies for a double header in Ruston beginning at Noon ET/11 a.m. CT.
