Herd Baseball Falls Short in Series Finale at No. 19 Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Herd baseball (8-32, 4-24 C-USA) came up short in the series finale at No. 19 Charlotte 49ers (34-14, 22-6 C-USA), 6-3, on Sunday afternoon.
The 49ers struck first with a pair of runs off Marshall starting pitcher Hunter Harritan in the first inning to put MU down 2-0.
However, the Herd benefited from two-out singles by third baseman Travis Sankovich, center fielder Luke Edwards and one by first baseman Zach Inskeep to score Sankovich and cut the deficit in half in the top of the second.
Then in the bottom of the third, right fielder Jordon Billups drew a leadoff walk followed up by a one-out walk issued to shortstop Geordon Blanton to put runners on first and second. Second baseman Devin Ward stepped up to the plate and smoked a 3-2 pitch down the right-field line to give Marshall a 3-2 lead.
Charlotte however struck for a run in each of the bottom of the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings to go up 6-3.
Relief pitcher Ayden Hodges threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth, but the Herd was unable to overcome the deficit.
UP NEXT
Marshall is back in action on Tuesday in Morgantown against the West Virginia Mountaineers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
