HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University women's soccer team (0-1-0) dropped a narrow contest, 2-1, in double overtime to the Wright State Raiders (1-0-0) in its 2021 Fall season opener in Huntington on Thursday night.
"We're a young team," Marshall women's soccer head coach Michael Swan said after the loss. "1-0 down with 20 minutes to play and we're still fighting tooth and nail to keep ourselves in it. I'm saying keep ourselves in it, but at 1-0 then I thought we were going to be the ones to score the next goal and then get the winner. I'm proud of them being fantastic and working through it."
MU had four freshmen, defenders Olivia Delikat, Kennedy Gunter and Ava Hall along with midfielder Cassidy Bell, play every minute of the game.
"Ava is playing left back. We have her there because she is so comfortable on the ball and she's a great attacking option even from the back. Meg (Jarvis) has given us an option up front. I want to go on and name all of them. Cassidy in the midfield. We have players coming off the bench and couldn't have asked for more than what they've done. This is a great learning moment for them. Battling back from 1-0, making it 1-1 and going to overtime. It's all you can ask for," Swan said about the effort of the freshmen in the opener.
Herd sophomore midfielder Abi Hugh got the action started just over a minute into the game, but it was saved by WSU keeper Jessika Seward.
The two sides went nearly 10 minutes without a shot on goal before Marshall goalkeeper Courtney McVicker stopped an attempt by Lauren Borcher in the 11th minute.
13 minutes later Destiny Johnson scored for the Raiders as MU trailed 1-0 in the 24th minute. Freshman forward Meg Jarvis and senior forward Kat Gonzalez each had shots go off target as the first half closed with the Herd trailing 1-0.
McVicker opened the second half with a save in the 48th minute. Senior defender Tesia Schray and freshman midfielder Courtney Corcoran fired balls on target, but the attempts were saved in the 53rd and 56th minutes, respectively.
Hugh added a shot on target seven minutes later, but Seward was there to make the save for the Raiders. McVicker then came up with three big saves in the 69th, 74th and 75th minutes to keep the deficit 1-0.
In the 76th minute, Schray headed the ball to the back of the net off a Corcoran corner to tie the match 1-1.
Jarvis and Corcoran nearly put the Green and White on top in the 80th and 87th minutes, but Seward kept the ball out of the net.
McVicker then followed with a save in the 87th minute and another with merely five seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.
After a first overtime with no shots on target, Jarvis put a ball on goal just over two minutes into the period that was saved.
Wright State then drew a penalty less than 30 seconds after the shot. Olga Massombo lined up at the spot and scored as MU fell in the opener.
"It's a quick turnaround. We have to get on the recovery train as quick as we can. Kentucky is traveling up to Purdue to play. We're going to have to go in there, bandage ourselves up and see what we can do," Swan commented on heading to Lexington to take on the Wildcats on Sunday.
