LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The Marshall University cross country teams competed at the 21st Live at Lou Classic at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville. Setting new personal records became the theme of the day for Coach Caleb Bowen's side, which saw 13 new PR's met against stiff competition.
The women competed in the Gold Race 5K, facing top competition across the country. Marshall finished 21st out of 41 schools. All 10 members of the Herd finished the Gold Race in under 20 minutes. Seven members hit new 5K personal records.
Senior Abby Herring led Marshall, finishing 18th overall. The Parkersburg native set a PR of nearly 40 seconds, breaking her time from last year at the same event (17:45.7). Herring holds the fastest women's cross country 5K time in school history.
Sophomore Kylee Mastin and freshman Hannah Wyler set PR's as well, with Mastin finishing with an 18:01.9 and Wyler racing an 18:32.2. Senior Sydney Smith came in directly behind Wyler with an 18:37.2. Freshman Asha Bora rounded out the top five with an 18:44.2.
Freshman Sophia Newsome, junior Kalei Jordan, and junior Cari Hively all finished with collegiate 5k personal records as well. Jordan cut off over 50 seconds from her previous best. Hively took down her previous cross country best of 20:49.9, an outstanding near-90 second drop.
"It was a heck of a day for us!" Marshall head cross country coach Caleb Bowen said. "The women finished 21st and beat some great teams! Our team average of 18:12 is one of the best in team history and definitely the best finish we've ever had! Abby led the women with the fastest XC time in women's history and finished in the top 20! Our top five all ran really strong. Loved watching Kylee, Hannah, Sydney, and Asha racing tough."
The men saw six new PR's set on Saturday, finishing 12th out of 45 teams in the 8K Blue Race.
Branden Wood led the Marshall men with a 36th place finish and a time of 25:01.9. Wood set a new 8K cross country personal record for the second consecutive meet, beating his last meet's time by nearly a full minute (25:57.8).
Freshman Matthew Schenenberg had a massive drop in his time as well, finishing behind Wood with a time of 25:05.7, beating his time of 26:57.2 at Virginia Tech. Evan White finished third, cutting off nearly 45 seconds from his last meet. Brett Armbruster and Kazuma Bowring rounded out the top five for the men. Armbruster's 25.48.7 was a near 30 second drop, while Bowring's 25:54.3 cut off over a minute from his previous 8K cross country best (27:05.9).
Junior Kent Bee set a new PR as well, cutting his previous 8K best of 26:57.8 to 26:29.2.
"The men's finish was a great step in the right direction with our top 5 breaking 26 minutes," Bowen added. "Branden and Matt were knocking on the door to breaking 25 and ran really tough in the last 2K! Evan ran the best race of the year for our number 3 and Brett surprised me by being our 4 and running a huge PR! Kaz closed our top 5 finishing with a PR and a 25:54! It was a fun day!"
