Marshall Women’s Soccer Draws East Leading JMU

Wolgemuth makes six saves to preserve the point

Box Score

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – For perspective, the Sun Belt's East leading JMU Dukes had gone over 600 minutes of open field game action without allowing a goal. That is nearly seven consecutive matches without allowing a goal outside of a set piece. That is until Kat Gonzalez's 67th minute goal helped the Marshall women's soccer team pick up a priceless draw against the team entering Friday's match at the top of the conference.

Gonzalez's equalizer was made possible with the assistance of six saves from Marshall freshman goalkeeper Alexis Wolgemuth. The Lincolnton, North Carolina native made a pair of diving stops to prevent the visitors from going up multiple goals after their lone tally in the 22nd minute.

"Alexis has the starting spot but it's a group [The Marshall goalkeepers] that have really stuck together," Marshall head women's soccer coach Michael Swan said. "They're a great group of goalkeepers, Austin [O'Connor] does a great job with them, and Alexis's performances are a reflection of all four of them, and the coaching staff and what we're trying to do, so Alexis is getting applauded but it's a team effort."

Marshall more than held their own with the visitors finishing tied on shots with nine. The Herd had a pair of near chances after equalizing in the second half, including a scramble off a corner kick that junior Campbell George nearly got on the end of to put the hosts in front.

After 90 minutes, Marshall and JMU played to a 1-1 draw, helping Coach Swan's side pick up a crucial point with three matches remaining in the regular season.

Separately, Marshall women's soccer hosted Mental Health Awareness Night. Representatives from the Be Herd Mental Wellness and Performance Counseling Center were in attendance at Hoops Family Field Friday night.

"It's not just our team or department, it's worldwide," Coach Swan said. "It's really really important to talk, and if we can be brave enough to do that, we're living in a better world."

UP NEXT

The Herd will visit Coastal Carolina for a match against the Chanticleers on Thursday, October 20. Kickoff from Conway will be at 7:00 p.m.
