Herd Baseball Falls to Sycamores, 9-7

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Marshall University baseball team (1-3) suffered a 9-7 loss to the Indiana State Sycamores (2-1) on Sunday in Port Charlotte, Florida.

The Herd started the scoring in the top of the first. First baseman Kyle Schaefer singled to right and center fielder Luke Edwards followed with a single to center to put runners at first and second with one out. Designated hitter Cole Williams stepped to the plate with two outs and runners still at first and second. Williams hit a pitch to right for a single, scoring Schaefer to put Marshall up 1-0.

MU starting pitcher Ryan Capuano began the ballgame with a pair of scoreless innings, including working around a leadoff hit in the first with a pair of strikeouts.

Marshall began the top of the third by seeing five-straight batters reach base safely. Shortstop Geordon Blanton led off with a walk and scored on a double to left by Schaefer. Edwards singled to the shortstop for his second hit of the game and moved Schaefer to third. Catcher Ryan Leitch got in on the action with a single to left, plating Schaefer and moving Edwards to second with no outs. Williams then singled to right and seeing Edwards cross home to put the Herd up 4-0.

After Capuano threw a scoreless bottom of the third, Indiana State struck for two runs in the fourth. However, the righty limited the damage by inducing an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play as MU held a 4-2 after four innings.

Marshall answered the next half inning with left fielder Daniel Carinci doubling home Leitch. However, in the bottom of the fifth, the Sycamores struck for a run off Herd reliever Nicholas Weyrich. Weyrich ended the inning by striking out a pair of batters to keep the MU lead at 5-3.

Weyrich returned to the hill in the bottom of the sixth. He settled in with a scoreless frame.

The Herd bats heated up in the top of the seventh. Schaefer hit his first homer of the season to left to lead off the inning. Leitch then blasted a solo shot to left one batter later as Marshall led 7-3.

Indiana State then tallied three runs in the bottom of the seventh and three runs in the eighth as it took advantage of three Herd miscues. MU trailed 9-7 heading into the ninth.

Marshall went down 1-2-3 to end contest in the ninth.

Indiana State's Brennyn Cutts picked up the win with Connor Fenlong recording his second save of the season. Herd reliever Cody Sharp suffered the loss.
