Blazers Take Opener over Herd

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Marshall University baseball team (12-13-1, 2-5 C-USA) dropped the series opener, 2-1, on Friday night in Birmingham, Alabama, to the UAB Blazers (18-7, 4-3 C-USA).

After three innings of scoreless baseball, Travis Sankovich led off the top of the fourth with a double down the left-field line. Two batters later Kyle Schaefer singled to right to put runners at the corners with one out. Daniel Carinci then reached on a fielder's choice seeing Schaefer out at second, but Sankovich crossed home to make it 1-0 Herd.

Marshall starting pitcher Jeffrey Purnell began his outing by throwing four consecutive scoreless frames and striking out three UAB batters.

The Blazers took advantage of a Herd wild pitch and error in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game 1-1.

Purnell gave up a two-out triple in the bottom of the sixth, but stranded him where he stood with a strikeout to end the inning.

Luke Edwards reached base for the 35th straight game on an error in the top of the seventh. UAB took the lead, 2-1, the next half inning on a Josh Sears sacrifice fly.

Herd reliever Cole Agemy threw a scoreless frame in the bottom of the eighth, but Marshall was unable to score in the ninth as it fell in the series opener.

The Herd looks to rebound in game two on Saturday against UAB. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT.
