Schaefer hits sixth homer of the season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Marshall University baseball team (12-14-1, 2-6 C-USA) dropped a one-run decision, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon in Birmingham, Alabama, to the UAB Blazers (19-7, 5-3 C-USA).

In the top of the first, Ryan Leitch singled up the middle with two outs. Cole Williams followed by reaching on a Blazer error and Travis Sankovich followed with a walk to load the bases. After seeing his count go 1-1 on a foul ball, Jordon Billups took three straight balls to draw a walk and score Leitch to give the Herd a 1-0 lead.

Luke Edwards extended his on-base streak to 36 games with a single to the pitcher in the top of the second.

Kyle Schaefer stepped to the plate to lead off the top of the fourth. The junior sent the first pitch of the inning over fence in right field for his team-leading sixth long ball of the season to double Marshall's lead, 2-0.

Herd starting pitcher Patrick Copen kept the Blazers off the board in the first four innings. The righty threw a 1-2-3 bottom of the third and stranded the bases loaded to end the fourth.

UAB tied the contest in the bottom of the fifth with a pair runs on two hits in the inning.
Â
Marshall reliever Chad Heiner came on in the bottom of the sixth for Copen. Heiner hurled scoreless sixth and seventh innings for the visitors.

The Blazers grabbed the lead with a run in the bottom of the eighth. MU was unable to answer in the top of the ninth as it fell to UAB.

Christian Lucio, Daniel Carinci and Schaefer each had multi-hit efforts with Lucio and Schaefer each recording an extra-base hit in the ballgame.

Copen and Heiner each struck out three batters.
