BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Marshall University baseball team (13-14-1, 3-6 C-USA) closed out its weekend in Birmingham with a 7-5 win over the UAB Blazers (19-8, 5-4 C-USA) on Sunday afternoon.
"It was great to see the team bounce back after losing two one-run games on Friday and Saturday," Marshall baseball head coach Jeff Waggoner said after the victory. "It shows the toughness of this team. Our pitching and defense were very good this weekend and the hitters made an adjustment today. Now we have to get ready for a tough midweek schedule with games against an ACC team (Virginia Tech) and a Big 12 opponent (WVU) on the road."
The Herd tallied the first run in the top of the first. It had three consecutive two-out singles by Ryan Leitch, Cole Williams and Travis Sankovich, with Sankovich bringing home Leitch to make it 1-0 Marshall.
MU struck again in the top of second with another two-out run. Kyle Schaefer reached on a hit-by-pitch to leadoff the frame and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Daniel Carinci. Two batters later, Luke Edwards singled to right to score Schaefer to double the visitor's lead to 2-0. The base knock extended the junior's on-base streak to 37 games.
Marshall starting pitcher Zac Addkison began his outing with three perfect innings of work as he struck out four Blazers.
UAB's Josh Sears tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, 2-2, with a two-run homer.
The Herd didn't want long to answer. Christian Lucio reached on a dropped fly ball and made it to second on the error to lead off the fifth. Leitch followed with a double to right center to place runners in scoring position with no outs. Williams and Sankovich hit consecutive sacrifice flies to put the Herd back up by two, 4-2.
In the sixth, Marshall scored its fourth and fifth two-out runs of the contest on an Edwards two-run long ball to left to extend the lead to 6-2. It was his sixth of the season, tying Schaefer for the team lead.
MU relief pitcher Louis Davenport came on for Addkison to begin the bottom of the fifth. Despite giving up three walks, the senior gave up no hits and no runs in scoreless fifth and sixth frames to go with three strikeouts.
After the Blazers tallied a run in the bottom of the seventh, Edwards brought home his fourth RBI of the ballgame on a fielder's choice in the top of the eighth.
Ryan Capuano came on from the bullpen for the Herd in the bottom of the eighth. He gave up a leadoff single, but used a double play and a fly out to get out of the inning.
Right-handed reliever Cole Agemy come on for Marshall in the bottom of the ninth. Two runs scored on a MU error, but Agemy recorded the final out to preserve a two-run win for the Herd.
