Edwards goes 3-for-5, extends on-base streak to 38 games

Box Score

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (13-15-1) fell to the Virginia Tech Hokies (18-7), 6-2, on Tuesday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va.

Virginia Tech's Jack Hurley plated the first runs of the contest on a three-run homer as Marshall trailed 3-0 after the first inning.

Herd starting pitcher Ryan Capuano settled into the contest and threw four consecutive scoreless frames, including ending the fourth with a 4-6-3 double play.

Luke Edwards singled to center in the top of the fourth to extend his on-base streak to 38 consecutive games.

Capuano exited after the sixth as the Hokies added a run in the bottom half of the inning and put Marshall's deficit at 4-0.

Sam Thompson came on from the bullpen for Capuano to pitch in the bottom of the seventh. Despite walking a pair of batters, Thompson induced an inning-ending double play on a line drive to keep it 4-0.

The Herd loaded the bases to begin the top of the eighth as Travis Sankovich drew a walk, Edwards singled through the left side and Cole Williams singled through the right side. Then with one out, Kyle Schaefer brought home Sankovich on a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 4-1.

The Hokies tallied a pair of runs the next half inning on a two-run home run by Cade Hunter to extend the home team's lead to 6-1.

In the top of the ninth, Drew Steelhammer drew a walk in a 10-pitch at-bat and Sankovich walked after seeing eight pitches. Edwards then loaded the bases with a single to center, his third of the contest, with two outs. Williams drew the third free pass of the inning and scored Steelhammer to cut Herd's deficit to 6-2. Ryan Leitch was the next batter, but struck out to end the game.
