Billups goes 4-for-4 with two homers

Box Score

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (15-18-1) tallied 10 runs on 15 hits in a 10-3 victory over the Ohio Bobcats (13-15) on Tuesday afternoon at the Kennedy Center. The Marshall pitching staff gave up just three runs on five hits and Jordon Billups went four-for-four with a pair of homers and four RBI.

"We had a tough weekend and lost the series to Middle Tennessee. To see them come out and respond like they did today, I'm proud of them," Marshall baseball head coach Jeff Waggoner said after the win. "We have a huge weekend coming up against one of the better teams in Conference USA with Louisiana Tech. We need to practice hard Wednesday and Thursday to get ready to go."

The Herd tallied the first run of the game as Cole Williams drew a two-out walk as Ryan Leitch doubled to left center to bring him home to give it a 1-0 lead after one. Billups got in on the action as he drove a 1-0 offering over the wall in right to lead off the second with a homer and put Marshall up 2-0.

Marshall starting pitcher Chad Heiner threw a pair of scoreless frames to start his outing.

Ohio took advantage of a MU error to plate a couple of runs on a pair of sacrifice flies in the top of the third. However, the Herd answered the next half inning. With a 2-2 count and two outs, Ryan Leitch smacked his eighth homer of the season to left. Kyle Schaefer then drew a walk and stole second. Billups then collected his second RBI of the ballgame with a single to right as Schaefer's run made it 4-2.

Marshall tallied another two-out run in the fourth after Geordon Blanton doubled to left with one out. One out later, Luke Edwards smoked a pitch to center for a double to score Blanton and make it 5-2. The double extended Edwards' on-base streak to 43 games.

Heiner closed out his outing by getting out of a bases-loaded jam with a groundout in the fifth. The righty closed out his five-inning outing by giving up just four hits and three walks as he allowed two unearned runs and struck out three batters. He picked up his first win of the season.

In the bottom half of the frame, Leitch leadoff with a double and two batters later, Billups brought him home with a single. After Zach Gardiner was hit by a pitch, Logan Anderson followed with a single to center to score Billups. The Herd held a 7-2 advantage through five innings.

Edwards led off the sixth inning with his eighth long ball of the season to extend the home side's lead to 8-2. Billups then hit his second dinger of the game to left to lead off the seventh and Travis Sankovich recorded a RBI single later in the inning with two outs to make it 10-2 Marshall.

The Bobcats tallied a run in the ninth, but MU hung on by a seven-run margin.

The Herd bullpen was dominant in the victory. Louis Davenport, Nicholas Weyrich, Carter Lyles and Cole Agemy combined to give up just one run on one hit and a walk in the final four innings of action.
