Bulldogs Take Series from Herd in Doubleheader

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (16-20-1, 5-10 C-USA) dropped a doubleheader falling 7-4 in game one and 11-5 in game two to the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (25-11, 11-4 C-USA) on Saturday afternoon at the Kennedy Center.
Game 1 LA Tech 7, Marshall 4
After Herd starting pitcher Patrick Copen struck out the side in the top of the first, Luke Edwards hit his 10th homer of the season in the next half inning over the wall in right with two outs to give Marshall a 1-0 lead. The junior reached base in the 45th consecutive game and homered in his fourth straight contest.
Copen then threw a 1-2-3 second inning with a pair of strikeouts and struck out another pair of Bulldogs in a scoreless third frame. The sophomore followed with a perfect top of the fourth.
Edwards struck out, but reached first on a dropped third strike wild pitch. Ryan Leitch then stepped to the plate and sent the first pitch he saw into the right-field parking lot for a two-run blast to extend the home side's lead to 3-0. It was his 10th homer of the season and sixth in the last seven games.
Cole Williams continued the Herd rally by reaching on a walk and advancing to second on a wild pitch. Kyle Schaefer moved Williams to third on a groundout. With one out, Daniel Carinci stepped to the plate. The Marshall first baseman singled through the left side to score Williams and make it 4-0 MU through four innings of play.
Copen hit a batter in the top of the fifth, but stranded him at second for with his ninth strikeout of the contest to keep the lead 4-0.
The Marshall righty recorded the first two outs in the sixth inning, but LA Tech got on the board with a solo homer by Steele Netterville. Copen settled down and got a ground out to end the frame with the Herd leading 4-1.
Copen returned to the hill to begin the seventh. The sophomore gave up a walk and a RBI double to Jorge Corona to begin the inning. He recorded a ground out as Corona advanced to third before being pulled from the ballgame. Copen went 6.1 innings giving up three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out a career-high nine Bulldogs.
LA Tech plated three more runs in the frame on singles by Logan McLeod and Netterville to take a 5-4 lead.
Cole McConnell added a pair of insurance runs for the Bulldogs with a two-run homer in the top of the eighth as Marshall trailed 7-4.
LA Tech reliever Ryan Harland threw the final 4.2 innings for the visitors. He gave up no runs to go with eight strikeouts on a hit and a walk as Marshall fell in game one.
Game Two LA Tech 11, Marshall 5
Herd starting pitcher Zac Addkison began his outing with a pair of scoreless frames and two strikeouts.
The Bulldogs took advantage of an error by left fielder Eddie Leon in the third as it plated four unearned runs, including a three-run homer by McConnell, as Marshall trailed 4-0.
After a Logan Anderson single and a pair of outs, Leon stepped into the batter's box in the bottom of the fourth. The freshman sent the first pitch over the scoreboard in left field for his first career long ball. The two-RBI homer cut the deficit in half, 4-2.
After LA Tech added a run in the top of fifth, Jordon Billups and Edwards combined for back-to-back one-out homers to cut the Bulldog advantage to one run, 5-4. The homer marked Edwards 46th straight game reaching base, extended his hitting streak to 11 games and marked his fifth consecutive ballgame with a dinger.
Leitch followed with a single to right as Anderson and Leon each drew walks to load the bases with two outs. Christian Lucio then saw four straight balls after fouling off the first offering for a bases loaded walk to tie the game, 5-5.
Addkison closed his six innings of work with a scoreless sixth as he struck out a pair in the inning.
Herd relief pitcher Carter Lyles came on from the bullpen to start the seventh. He proceeded to throw perfect seventh and eighth innings to keep the scored tied 5-5.
The Bulldog offense plated six runs on eight hits in the top of ninth as LA Tech took the series from Marshall after recording the final three outs in the bottom of the ninth.

Marshall is back in action on Tuesday when heads to Columbus, Ohio, to take on Ohio State.
