Monarchs Take Series Finale from Herd

Edwards extends on-base streak to 60 games

NORFOLK, Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (20-30-1, 9-18 C-USA) fell 5-4 in Norfolk, Virginia, to the Old Dominion Monarchs (34-15, 16-11 C-USA) in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

With a two-out single in the top of the first, Luke Edwards extended his on-base streak to 60 games and his hit streak to 11.

Herd starting pitcher Zac Addkison came out the gates by throwing scoreless first and second innings. The sophomore struck out four batters in his first six outs.

The Monarchs took advantage of a pair of walks to begin the bottom of the third and scored a run on a fielder's choice to take a 1-0 lead.

Addkison rebounded in the fourth by working around a leadoff single to blank ODU in the frame.

Geordon Blanton led off the fifth with a double down the right-field line and Travis Sankovich followed with a single through the left side to put runners at the corners. One batter later Edwards doubled down the left-field line to score Blanton and move Sankovich to third with one out. Ryan Leitch then hit a sacrifice fly to score Sankovich and give Marshall a 2-1 lead.

Addkison finished his outing with a scoreless fifth by striking out a pair of Monarchs. The right-handed pitcher went 5.0 innings giving up just one run on five walks and two hits while striking out six.

Reliever Nicholas Weyrich came on to start the bottom of the sixth. ODU's Thomas Wheeler hit a two-run homer in the inning to put the home team back on top, 3-2.

Eddie Leon came on from the bullpen for Weyrich in the seventh and threw a 1-2-3 frame.

Monarch Tommy Bell hit the first pitch of the eighth inning over the left-field fence for a home run off Cole Agemy as Marshall trailed 4-2 after eight innings of play.

Blanton drew a walk to start the top of the ninth. Sankovich brought Blanton home with a double on his third hit of the contest to cut the deficit to one, 4-3. Kyle Schaefer then singled to right to place runners at the corners with no outs. Edwards tied the game, 4-4, with a base knock through the right side to score Sankovich.

However, Brock Gagliardi hit a one-out, walk-off homer in the bottom half of the inning for ODU.

Edwards went 4-for-4 in the series finale and 10-for-15 in the series. The junior leads Conference USA with 79 hits.
