Box Score
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Marshall University baseball team (20-26-1, 9-15 C-USA) dropped the series finale at UTSA (31-17, 16-8 C-USA), 5-4, in San Antonio, Texas, on Sunday.
Travis Sankovich, Luke Edwards and Jordon Billups all recorded singles in the top of the first, but the Herd left the bases loaded to end the frame. Edwards extended his on-base streak to 56 games with his base knock.
UTSA scored first with a two-run homer by Ryan Flores in the bottom of the first.
It didn't take long for Marshall to answer. The next half inning Daniel Carinci doubled down the left-field line with one out and Geordon Blanton drew a walk. Sankovich then doubled to left to score Carinci and move Blanton to third. Two batters later, Edwards hit a two-out double to left, sending Blanton and Sankovich home to give MU a 3-2 lead.
Marshall starting pitcher Zac Addkison settled into the ballgame as he threw 1-2-3 frames in the second and third. Although the sophomore gave up a single and a walk in the fourth, he induced an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play to keep the score 3-2 Herd.
Kyle Schaefer stepped to the plate with two outs in the top of the fifth. The junior sent a 2-1 offering over the fence in center for his ninth homer of the season and extended the visitor's lead to 4-2. Despite giving up a run in the bottom half of the frame, Addkison stranded the bases loaded to limit the damage as Marshall held a 4-3 advantage after five innings.
Addkison followed with a scoreless bottom of the sixth as he struck out a pair of Roadrunners in his final inning of work. The San Antonio, Texas, native went 6.0 innings as he gave up three runs on five hits and four walks while striking out five.
Reliever Cole Agemy came on from the bullpen to start the bottom of the seventh. He walked the first two batters and was replaced by Louis Davenport. Davenport got a fly out and a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning.
Davenport followed up with a pair of strikeouts in 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth.
The Roadrunners scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth to take the series from the Herd.
