Edwards extends on-base streak to 57 games
MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Marshall University baseball team (20-27-1) fell on Tuesday evening to the Morehead State Eagles (22-24), 9-5, in Morehead, Kentucky.
Travis Sankovich led off the game with a single, but was caught stealing later in the inning. Luke Edwards recorded a two-out walk to extend his on-base streak to 57 games later in the top of the first.
Starting pitcher Nicholas Weyrich allowed a pair of runners to reach in the bottom of the first. However, he got out the inning unscathed to keep the ballgame scoreless.
The Eagles got on the board first with five runs in the bottom of the second, including a two-run homer by Ashton Roy.
Relief pitcher Chad Heiner threw scoreless third and fourth innings. The righty ended the third with a strikeout.
Morehead added another run in the fifth to extend its advantage to 6-0.
Sankovich started the sixth with a single to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He was moved over to third on a ground out by Christian Lucio. After the ground out, Edwards plated Sankovich on a sacrifice fly for Marshall's first run of the game.
After relief pitcher Carter Lyles shut out the Eagles in the bottom of the sixth, a two-run dinger by Drew Steelhammer cut the Herd's deficit to three runs, 6-3.
Morehead State answered with three runs the next half inning. Ryley Preece hit a two-run homer in the frame.
After finishing the seventh, reliever Louis Davenport threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth.
Sankovich had an RBI single and a RBI ground out by Lucio in the ninth, but the Herd was unable to overcome the deficit as it fell on the road.
UP NEXT
Marshall starts a three-game series at Old Dominion on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
