HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University volleyball team (4-5) fell in its final two contests of the Marshall Invite to Murray State (4-4), 3-1, (28-26, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16) and Kent State (7-2), 3-2, (12-25, 29-27, 26-24, 23-25, 15-7) on Saturday at the Cam Henderson Center.

Murray State 3, Marshall 1
Senior Lydia Montague had nine kills on 16 attempts, with only one error, for a .500 hitting percentage to go with a team-high eight blocks.

Graduate student Macy McElhaney had a team-high 10 kills and fifth-year senior Kaitlyn Gehler had 10 digs.

Freshman Bella Thompson led the way with 16 assists.

The Herd trailed 5-4 early in the first set. However, after a Macy McElhaney kill, a kill by Brown, a Racers attacking error and three straight service aces by freshman Flora Sebestyen, sent the home squad on a 6-0 rally to go up 10-5. Murray State came back in the opening set to take a 22-16 lead over the Herd. Marshall then took advantage of six Racer errors and a kill by sophomore Brynn Brown to tie the set 23-23. The two teams traded points until Murray State took the final two points to take the set 28-26.

The second frame saw Marshall tie the score twice early on, but the Racers lead entire set after taking a 3-2 lead and took it 25-18.

The third set saw Murray State take the first three points. However, the Herd battled back and took an 11-9 lead after senior Essence Clerkley and junior Regan Tinkle combined for a block and Tinkle spiked home a kill. Marshall did not trail the rest of the way. A Clerkley kill and a Racers error put MU up 22-17, its largest lead of the set. Clerkely sealed the set with a kill for the Herd, 25-23.

Marshall took the first three points of the fourth set. Murray State came back to take a 10-5 lead, but a kill and service ace by Montague, a kill by Tinkle, a block from Thompson and Clerkley, and a Racer error capped a 5-0 rally for the Herd to tie the set 10-10. However, Murray State jumped out in front and eventually took the set, 25-16, and the match.

Kent State 3, Marshall 2
Montague recorded a career-high 19 kills on 32 attacks and only three errors for a .500 hitting percentage.

Redshirt junior Olivia Fogo had a career-high nine kills and seven blocks in the match as Clerkley also had a career-high 11 kills.

Macy McElhaney's 19 digs in the contest were a career-high with Brown collecting a career-high 49 assists with 17 digs for a double-double.

The second set saw Marshall leading 15-11 halfway through the frame after a Montague service ace. The Golden Flashes chipped away at the Herd lead until it tied the set 20-20. The two sides traded points until Kent State took the set 29-27.

The third set was all knotted up at 10 points each. Clerkley then had a kill, Macy McElhaney completed a trio of kills and a Golden Flashes error gave the Herd a 17-11 advantage on a 7-1 rally. However, Kent State came back to take the set 26-24.

In the fourth frame, the scoreboard was tied 19-19 late in the set. Marshall took six of the final 10 points, including a big kill from freshman Bianca Giglio, to take the set 25-23 and force a fifth and final set.
