Herd Volleyball Sweeps Furman to Begin South Carolina Road Trip

Brown, Parrish collect double-doubles

Box Score

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University volleyball team (5-5) swept the Furman Paladins (4-6), 3-0, (25-22, 25-23, 25-12) on Friday evening in Greenville, South Carolina.

"Tonight was the perfect definition of a team win," Herd volleyball head coach Ari Aganus said after the victory. "We had some pieces that couldn't get flowing offensively and Macy (McElhaney) and Jazz (Parrish) stepped up and took the responsibility and execution themselves the entire match. Brynn (Brown) was another force all the way around and a solid piece we could rely on. We're excited to get another opportunity to get better in one last match before we start conference play tomorrow at USC Upstate."

Graduate student Macy McElhaney led the Herd with 16 kills in the match.

With 10 kills and 11 digs, junior Jazminn Parrish collected a double-double. Sophomore Brynn Brown also had a double-double with a match-high 27 assists and a team-high 17 digs.

Fifth-year senior Kaitlyn Gehler had 16 digs in the win.

In the first set, the score was all knotted up at 7-7. The Herd went on a 9-1 rally with a pair of kills by Macy McElhaney, two kills by senior Essence Clerkley, a kill each from redshirt junior Olivia Fogo and Brown to go with a service ace by Montague to take a 16-8 lead. The Paladins pulled within two points late, 23-21, but the Herd hung on as a Fogo kill sealed the set, 25-22.

MU trailed for the majority of the second stanza until a pair of kills by Macy McElhaney, a kill by Brown, and a block by Parrish and graduate student Kayla Malec flipped the score to 14-13 Marshall. The score was tied three times down the stretch, but the Herd did not falter as it took the second set 25-23.

The third frame was all Marshall. It grabbed the lead from the beginning and never looked back. The closest Furman came to the Herd after the first few points of the set was 8-5 as Marshall swept the contest with a dominating 25-12 score in the final set. MU had a .326 hitting percentage in the final set with 17 kills on 43 attacks and only three errors.
