HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—Marshall cross country is set to run in the team's second regular season meet Friday at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational in Blacksburg, Virginia.

The meet takes place at the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course on Virginia Tech's campus and is set to begin at 6 p.m. for the women's 6K and will continue at 6:40 p.m. for the men's 8K.

"This meet will be a great test because it's 8k for the men and 6k for the women," Marshall head cross country coach Caleb Bowen said. "With where we are in our training cycle, this will be a great opportunity to show off our strengths. Ultimately, it will help develop our kids to be ready for the conference championship in October. I'm excited to watch them compete and represent the kelly green down in Blacksburg."

In the opening meet for the Herd at the Mike Baumer XC Classic, Marshall runners began their season with a fourth place finish for the women, and a sixth place finish for the men. Over 300 runners from over 15 schools competed at the meet, with senior Abby Herring finishing second overall, with a time of 17:27. Herring's time set a new Marshall women's cross country 5k record and earned her SBC Female Runner of the Week honors. Sophomore Branden Wood led the men with a time of 15:27.

The Herd will compete against a smaller field at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational, with 11 teams scheduled to appear.

Scheduled competing teams:

Augusta, East Tennessee State, High Point, James Madison, Liberty, Longwood, Marshall, Radford, Sweet Briar, Virginia Tech, VMI

"This week's meet at Virginia Tech will be a great test for our group,"  Bowen said. "There are some great schools competing, namely VT, Liberty, and Radford who are ranked in the southeast region. High Point and JMU also have great squads and I bet they'll be ranked as well. If we can run with those teams and compete well, we will be positioned well for the championship meets later in the season."
