Cross Country Competes at Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational

Herring and Wood lead women's and men's sides respectively
BLACKSBURG, Va.- The Marshall University cross country teams competed Friday at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational. Both teams increased their distance from the opening meet, with the women racing a 6k and the men racing an 8k.
The women finished 5th out of 10 schools. For the second consecutive meet, senior Abby Herring led the Marshall women with a top-10 finish. She finished 9th overall and ran a time of 21:58.2.
Sophomore Kylee Mastin and senior Sydney Smith came through the line second and third for Marshall. Mastin finished 22nd, running a time of 22:40.0, and Smith came through the line in 23:03.7.
Freshmen Hannah Wyler and Asha Bora finished their first collegiate 6k with a fourth and fifth place finish respectively for Marshall. Wyler finished in 38th with a time of 23:30.3. Bora rounded out the top five for Coach Bowen's side, finishing in 48th with a time of 23:53.8.
"I'm proud of the way we competed today," Marshall head cross country coach Caleb Bowen said. "I thought the women raced hard and handled the jump to the 6k pretty well! Very proud of the freshmen who were running their first 6k ever."
The men's team saw sophomore Branden Wood lead the team with a top-30 finish. Wood finished in 29th with a time of 25:57.8. Wood set a new cross country 8k personal record by nearly a minute. His previous best came at the 2021 conference championships, with a time of 26:41.1.Â
Senior Evan White finished in 41st with a time of 26:17.2. Matthew Schenenberg and Jacob Birurakis finished in a group, Scheneberg with a 26:57.2 and Birurakis paced at 27:05.5. Kazuma Bowring closed out the top five, with a time of 27:14.8, finishing in 72nd.
As a team, the Herd men finished 8th out of 11 schools in the 8k race.Â
"The men's race was highlighted by Branden (White) and his 25:57," Bowen added. "He ran tough from the gun and I'm really proud of him. Our 1-5 split definitely needs to be closer."Â

Marshall heads to the 21st Annual Live in Lou Cross Country Classic on Saturday, October 1st at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park. This will be the fourth consecutive year Marshall has competed in the event.
