Thundering Herd Men Win Marshall Classic on Historic Day for Track & Field Program

Marshall women finish second, setting two new school records
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- It was a banner day at the Jeff Small Track at the Chris Cline Indoor Complex as the Thundering Herd women finished second at the Marshall Classic. The day also saw the victorious return of the men's track and field program, competing for the first time since 2003.Â
The Herd women finished ahead of Cleveland State, Morehead State, Ohio, UC, and Wright State, with a total of 192 points. The men won the meet with 97 points in its first official competition since the 2003 MAC Championships.Â
Two school records were set Saturday, with senior Abby Herring breaking her own indoor school record in the mile, racing a 4:54.24, finishing second in the event. Sophomore Tyra Thomas also broke a record in the 60 meter hurdles, racing an 8.37 to win the event.Â
The men made their official return with senior Brett Armbruster becoming the first official victory on the track for a Marshall male since 2003. The Barboursville native won the mile with a time of 4:20.96. The men also saw two top placed finishes from Timothy Snyder in the Weight Throw and Shot Put, and Quay Harrison winning the High Jump.
Freshman Ethan Bowens from Wayne won the men's 60 meter dash, racing a 6.90. A trio of Thundering Herd football players followed suit with EJ Horton, Rasheen Ali, and Jayden Harrison finishing behind Bowens.Â
"I thought we had a great meet with our athletes achieving 48 lifetime bests today," Marshall track and field head coach Jeff Small said. "We're proud of the hard work the kids put in over break which paid off in their performances today. It was fun seeing the guys pull out a victory in their first competition back in action."
