COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS - The Marshall cross country teams competed at the loaded Arturo Barrios Invitational Friday morning at Texas A&M.
In a women's race featuring 385 runners, senior Abby Herring finished 13th, racing a new 6K school and personal record of 20:02 (5:22 pace). Three more Marshall women (Hannah Wyler, Asha Bora, and Sophia Newsome) set 6K personal records as well.
"Abby absolutely demolished her race," Head Coach Caleb Bowen said. "That's the fastest 6K time in school history and she was competitive with some of the best runners in the entire country. It was so awesome to see her go for it and race with the best!"
Marshall senior Evan White led the men with an 8K time of 24:53 (5:00 pace). The time trimmed off three seconds from his Louisville Classic time two weeks prior. Ronnie Saunders and Paul Sepulveda had large jumps as well in their 8K times, Saunders cut 30 seconds from his Louisville time, while Sepulveda trimmed 40 seconds.
"Today was a lot of fun!" Coach Bowen said. "I thought the men competed really well, especially racing the teams in our conference and our former conference. Evan continued to lead the team with Ronnie not too far behind. We just need to close the gap from 2-3."
"On the women's side, it was so much fun seeing Hannah Wyler, Hannah Toth, and Asha Bora step up and compete very well. Sophia Newsome brought the team home by being our number 5."
With over 42 teams representing all major conferences, the Herd women finished 24th, placing just behind Arkansas State and ahead of Louisiana. The Marshall men finished 32nd, edging SBC member Louisiana.
