Herd Baseball Takes Series, Splits Doubleheader Against Canisius

Edwards hits walk-off homerun, Harlow records fourth win

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (8-5) took the weekend series over the Canisius Golden Griffins (3-8) with a 6-5 win in game of a doubleheader on Saturday before falling 4-3 in game two at the Kennedy Center.

Drew Harlow earned his fourth win of the season in game one as Luke Edwards hit a walk-off homer to take the contest.

"Drew Harlow, again, comes in and puts zeroes on the board and gives your ballclub that chance. Then Luke gets the big hit to walk it off. That's always fun to walk it off," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the doubleheader. "But today is baseball. In the first game we got that hit. In the second game, we didn't. We were in a great situation there in the second game and you contemplate whether you can bunt or not, but you have your best hitters coming up with the tying run in scoring positon. I felt good about letting them swing away. Probably the only spot you can hit a ball and double up Luke Edwards and that's exactly what happens. That's baseball."

Game 1 – Marshall 6, Canisius 5
Edwards and Harlow starred in the game one victory.

Harlow, who came on in relief in his fourth straight appearance, continued to deal on the mound. The junior right-handed pitcher threw 4.2 innings of scoreless baseball giving up just one hit and striking out four. He got out of the fifth with a double play on his fourth pitch of the game and worked around a one-out triple in the sixth.

Edwards, who was 2-for-3 in contest with three RBI, led off the ninth inning with the score tied 5-5. The fifth-year senior sent a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left to seal the series for the Herd with the walk-off homer, his second of the season.

Gio Ferraro also had a multi-RBI contest by bringing home a pair of runs as Cam Harthan went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Kyle Schaefer saw his 11-game hit streak come to an end, but extended his on-base streak to 12 contest with a pair of walks.

Game 2 – Canisius 4, Marshall 3
Edwards and Harthan each went 2-for-3 with a RBI in game two. Edwards' double in the sixth was the 47th of his career, putting him in sole possession of second in program history and one behind Victor Gomez's record of 48.

Jalen Hollins, Chad Heiner and Ryan Capuano combined to throw 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball out of the bullpen. Heiner struck out three of the four batters he faced.

"Again I liked our bullpen guys in game two as well," Beals said. "Heiner gave us some big outs. Cap shut it down again and gave the team a chance. You see the character of this ballclub that continues to not give in. We have to find way to be tougher for nine innings. We are really tough in those last three innings. We've proven that all year long. I would like to see us get tougher earlier in the game. We have a big week ahead of us. We have two mid-week games against Ohio State and then conference play on the weekend against App State. It's good to win the series here at home. We have some work to do this week to stay sharp and get ready for the Sun Belt Conference."

Starting pitcher Zac Addkison had five punch outs in 5.1 innings.

Schaefer drew two more walks to extend his on-base streak to 13 games.
