Edwards Becomes Program Doubles Leader Saturday Against App State

3/18/2023 9:06:00 PM | Baseball

Herd falls to Mountaineers

Box Score

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – With a double in the bottom of the fifth, Luke Edwards became Marshall baseball's (8-8, 0-2 Sun Belt) all-time leader with 49 in his career in a contest against the App State Mountaineers (10-7, 2-0 Sun Belt) on Saturday in Charleston, West Virginia.

The Herd fell 9-8 to App.

"Drew Harlow has been so good all year long. We were in a position where he had the ball with a lead and it just didn't work out today. That's baseball. I'm gonna give Drew Harlow the ball in that position again," MU baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the loss. "We did a lot of good things as a ballclub today. We got ourselves in positions. We played with great energy and kept competing."

Edwards went 3-for-4 in the contest scoring three runs and recording a leadoff triple in the first to go with his record-breaking double. His 49th double broke a tie with Victor Gomez, who now previously held the record at 48.

The top of the lineup for the Herd of Edwards, Kyle Schaefer and Owen Ayers accounted for eight of the team's 11 hits and six of its eight RBI.

Ayers tallied three of his four RBI on a homer in the bottom of the fifth. Schaefer brought home a pair of runs to go with two hits.

Elijah Vogelsong also had a multi-hit effort with two hits in his three at bats, including a double, with two runs scored.

Relief pitcher Drew Harlow saw a 17.2 scoreless inning streak end when he allowed his first run of the season in the fifth inning.
