Copen Has Career Game in Home Opener Against St. John’s

Junior records career-high 10 strikeouts
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Starting pitcher Patrick Copen registered a career-high 10 strikeouts on Saturday in the Marshall Thundering Herd's (4-3) 2023 home opener against St. John's (5-3). MU fell 8-4 in the contest.
"The beauty of baseball is you get another game tomorrow," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the loss. "We lost our Friday game last weekend and we responded well on Saturday with a win and I challenge our guys to do that again tomorrow."
Copen began his outing by striking out the side in the top of the first. He followed that up with another three in the second. The junior right-handed pitcher punched up at least two batters in each inning he completed as he went 4.2 in the contest.
Nicholas Weyrich threw a 1-2-3 top of the ninth with a pair of strikeouts.
Gabriel Cabrera led off the bottom of the third with his second homer of the season as Owen Ayers hit his first long ball at Marshall in the bottom of the eighth. Ayers also brought home a run on a bases loaded walk in the first inning.
Gio Ferraro recorded his sixth RBI of the season on his team-leading 12th hit in the third.
With a single to right in the bottom of the first, Kyle Schaefer extended his hitting streak to seven games.
UP NEXT
Marshall concludes it series against St. John's on Sunday with a doubleheader at GoMart Ballpark in Charleston, West Virginia, beginning at 1 p.m.
