CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (5-4) split the final two games of its series against the St. John's Red Storm (6-4) in a doubleheader on Sunday in Charleston, West Virginia, taking game one 4-2 and falling 5-3 in game two.
Drew Harlow moves to 3-0 after five-hitless relief innings in game one, retiring 15 of his 16 batters faced. Kyle Schaefer extended his hit streak to nine games.
Game 1 – Marshall 4, St. John's 2
Starting pitcher Raymond Pacella went 4.0 innings striking out four batters, giving up just two runs on four hits and two walks.
"I've been feeling really good. I was attacking them with my best pitch, my fastball, in and out, and making sure I executed as best as I can," Harlow said about the start to his season and his outing.
Harlow came into the game to start the fifth inning in relief of Pacella with the Herd trailing 2-1. Harlow threw 5.0 hitless frames allowing just one walk and punching out four. He allowed the walk to his second batter faced and retired the next 14 in order.
"Drew has been really good for us early on this season," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said. "He was as good as he's been today, was just what we needed. A lot of times we go to (Ryan) Capuano in a save situation, but Drew had such a command of the game that we let him ride it out."
In the bottom of the sixth after a Luke Edwards leadoff single, Schaefer launched a two-run homer to right to give MU a 4-2 lead, its first of the contest. The long ball extended Schaefer's hit streak to eight games.
"We got the big hit from Schaefer. The two-run homerun to give us the lead and Drew took care of it from there," Beals said.
Daniel Carinci got the Herd on the board with a RBI single in the third and tied the contest in the bottom of the fifth with a RBI triple.
Game 2 – St. John's 5, Marshall 3
The Marshall bullpen of Chad Heiner, Nicholas Weyrich, Peyton Schofield and Ryan Capuano combined to throw 5.1 innings giving up just an unearned run on four hits and four walks. Each of them struck out one batter.
MU tallied three runs in the bottom of the eighth on a pinch-hit RBI single by Calin Smith and a two-RBI double by Owen Ayers.
"The character of our ball club is not going to allow us to stop," Beals commented about game two. "We put those three runs up in the eighth and put us in position. We just needed two runs in the ninth. We just needed to put a runner on base and we weren't able to get it. They did a great job executing pitches in game two. Their starting pitcher, you have to give him credit. He commanded the outer part of the plate and used his changeup very effectively and so did their closer."
Schaefer recorded a single to right in the bottom of the seventh to extend his hit streak to nine games.
