Schaefer extends hit streak to 10 games with grand slam
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – A six-run first inning set the tone early for the Marshall University baseball team (6-4) in an 11-2 win over the Radford Highlanders (5-8) on Tuesday. Kyle Schaefer extended his hit streak to 10 games as Bryce Blevins earned his second win of the season.
"We took some quality at bats in that first inning then obviously you get the bop from Schaefer to open things up," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said about the team's first inning. "Blevins put up the zero. Then we get that big first inning that allowed everyone, especially our pitching staff, to settle into the ballgame. This is exactly what we needed in a mid-week game to get those guys in the bullpen some work."
After Blevins threw a scoreless top of the first, Daniel Carinci and Luke Edwards started the bottom of the inning with a pair of singles. Owen Ayers then loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch bringing Schaefer to the plate.
Schaefer proceeded to launch a 1-0 offering over the left-field fence for a grand slam. The homer extended his streak to 10 games and was his second homer in the last three games.
Amari Bartee and Owen Noble followed with RBI doubles to make it 6-0 Marshall after the first inning of play.
The offensive explosion continued as Noble registered another RBI double in the third along with a RBI double from Eddie Leon in the frame.
Gio Ferraro plated a run with a groundout in the fifth as Bartee brought home his second run of the contest with a single in the inning.
"You have to use your bullpen guys, in my opinion, in these mid-week games. You have to give them shots to pitch and be sharp, so when you do call them on the weekend they have a level of readiness," Beals said about his pitching staff in the game.
The Marshall pitching staff combined to give up just two runs, one earned, on seven hits and five walks. Blevins, Eddie Leon, Jalen Hollins and Nicholas Weyrich each recorded a pair of strikeouts.
Cole Agemy threw a scoreless top of the third as Colby Collins allowed just one hit in a scoreless ninth inning to finish the game.
Christian Lucio went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a double in the contest as he was one of five MU batters to record a multi-hit effort. Carinci has had two hits in two of the last three games.
